Achievement unlocked! The STI is broken in. N ow I can drive it like I stole it and rev it to redline instead of keeping it under 4000 rpm per the break in procedure. Except the roads around here will be ice and snow for approximately 6 more months, so that tends to be difficult this time of year. I took the picture while stopped on the side of the road, then took off in an icy burnout. Traction control was protesting like crazy the whole time so I didn’t really end up getting it up past 5000 rpm anyway.
1000! Yes, I was stopped on the side of the road. Yes, I live in the middle of nowhere. No, there wasn’t any other traffic around to worry about.
After about a month with the car, I’m definitely liking it. It feels very much like my 2007 did. The steering seems to be more precise and have better feel, and there is a very noticeable improvement in power delivery. The 2019 is a huge improvement over the 2007, but they are still definitely the same car. They are still loud, fast, raw and obnoxious, and that is why I love the STI.

Find parking lot. Turn off traction control. Rev to your heart’s delight.

Turn the TC off and learn how to really drive it.

Just a word of warning, I kinda slide my manual
outback all around in the winter and it just eats rear brakes, so keep an eye on your brake pads as it seems that Subaru likes to use the brakes for TC more than most cars. I turned off TC the other day and noticed an improvement
but it wouldn’t let me go into a true 4 wheel power drift, it was still kicking in and spoiling the fun. Dog wasn’t to happy either.

The STI has two levels of turning the TC off. If you press the button it goes in to “traction mode”, but if you hold the button down for a few seconds it turns everything off. According to the manual it looks like it leaves everything on, just delays the intervention of the traction and stability control systems.
Traction mode This mode restricts the functions of the Traction Control Syst em and Vehicle Dynamics Control system and thus delays utilizing their functions as a reaction to vehicle behavior in comparison with the Vehicle Dynamics Control mode.
If you hold the TC off button down everything except the ABS gets turned off.
Vehicle Dynamics Control OFF mode This mode allows only the ABS control. When you press the switch for more than approximately 2 seconds during engine operation, the Vehicle Dynamics Control OFF indicator light on the combination meter illuminates.
Just don’t hold the switch down for too long or it will turn the TCS full on and ignore any button presses until you turn the car off and back on.
. If you press and hold the switch for 30 seconds or longer, the Vehicle Dynamics Control OFF indicator light turns off, the Vehicle Dynamics Control system is activated, and the syste m ignores any further pressing of the switch. To make the switch usable again, turn the ignition switch to the “LOCK”/“OFF” position and restart the engine.

I tend to enter the work parking lot sideways all winter long. I’ll have to do a celebratory donut on the way out of work today.

Frosty donuts shall be performed. The parking lot at work has been getting entered sideways for a while now.

TC off wasn’t going to get me going any faster on that mess. You could just about ice skate on it if the ice wasn’t so bumpy.

I’m really jealous of the much nicer leather they put on the STi steering wheel. Mines starting to peel quite a bit after 60,000 miles.

Maybe not, but it would give your more feeling for how slick it really was, and teach you more about handling it on those conditions.
Not trying to be snarky, I just feel systems like TC end up in over confidence, leading to more issues.

Yeah, I’m somewhat familiar with driving on snow and ice. We average over 200" of snow where I live, and I haven’t seen less than 150" since I’ve started driving 20+ years ago .
